In English, the common auxiliary verbs include do, does, did, have, has, would, should, will, be, and shall. These auxiliary verbs can be roughly divided into three categories: semi-auxiliary verbs, which are intermediate between auxiliary verbs and regular verbs, and include have to, be about to, be able to, be going to, be due to, seem to, be likely to, be meant to, be obliged to, be supposed to, and be willing to, among others. The basic auxiliary verbs are be, do, have, and their derived forms. For example, "I have finished the homework" should be "I have finished the homework" to correctly use the auxiliary verb.

Auxiliary verbs do not have any intrinsic meaning; they assist main verbs in forming the verb phrase of a sentence. As there are many types of auxiliary verbs, the following primarily introduces the use of auxiliary verbs such as be, do, will, and have:

1. Be as an Auxiliary Verb:

Sentences constructed with the linking verbs am, is, are become general questions by placing am, is, are at the beginning of the sentence and ending with a question mark. To form negative sentences, simply add not after am, is, are.

2. Was and Were:

Was is the past tense of am and is, while were is the past tense of are. If a sentence contains either of these words, the method for forming questions and negatives is the same as with be.
