Picking your Major Early

This decision will have as great an impact if not more, on how the rest of their life will turn out than what college they decide to attend. How someone views the world, what jobs they are eligible for, what graduate schools they can apply… will all be largely influenced by what someone majors in.

Even when colleges do have the same major, they often look at academic disciplines from different points of view. If you were to study at the conservative department of economics of University of Chicago vs. the liberal department at UC Berkeley, you would probably come away from college with very different views of economics.

Universities often also have their most popular majors broken off into smaller schools or colleges so they can better regulate the number of student s in that major. These smaller schools or colleges often have their own separate application process. If you would like to major in Engineering and you apply to UC Berkeley, you would actually apply to the College of Engineering, instead of the main College of Letters and Sciences. As you might suspect, getting admitted to these smaller schools and colleges is usually much more difficult. Universities often will have back doors, that allow for some students to transfer into these schools or colleges during junior year, but competition for these few spots is often very fierce and should not be taken as a given.

All of these schools have majors that they have more or less trouble getting students for. As you might guess, applying to schools saying you want to major in a department they have an overflow of students in will most likely hurt your chances, while stating you want to major in something they are struggling to find students for will help your chances.

Colleges make assumptions and generalizations about you based on what you have in your application. If you state you want to major in women’s studies at a school well known for their business program, while you have taken several business classes, several of your extracurricular activities are business related, and you are male, they probably will guess that you are actually interested in their business program. If you want to major in business it would be easier to getting accepted majoring in economics, if you want to major in engineering it would be easier getting accepted majoring in physics...

The fact is colleges usually leave back door ways to get into the most popular schools and majors, just so they can get better students to apply and go to their school for less popular majors. If you are also interested in a major other than the one you put on your application, it is very important that you look to see how easy it is to transfer into this major, or you may end up getting into to college you want, but you may get stuck majoring in something you don’t.
