Some people may think written evaluations should replace grades as a measurement for students’ performance, since it is more comprehensive and more effective; others, however, still believe grades are more helpful for assessment of students’ learning ability. As far as I am concerned, grades are great indicators of a good learning, and the reasons are as follows.
First of all, students will be encouraged to work hard in order to achieve a higher grades; they will devote more time on studing, and develop a “never give up” spirit. This will not only benefit their study, but also teach them a truth, that is, everyone needs constant learning and hard working in order to be useful to this society. Students who have developed such learning habit and never give up nature will not only have good performance in schools, but can also be more confident in other aspects. For example, such natures are important factors even after finishing schools. I believe most students understand the importance of these qualities and impacts on their life. Therefore, they know how important it is to work hard and try to achieve a better score.
Grades can also promote a student’s interests. In most cases, students will try their best to prepare the exam in order to get a high grade. During the preparation, they will develop interests in what they are learning. Then they will probably get a good score in their exams. In turn, they will find their courses are more interesting, and learn with more passion. Furthermore, they have more opportunities to discover other knowledge related to their courses out of interests. Take me for example, I was good at geography when I was in high school, so I was interested in all the knowledge about geography, such as the names of all the countries’ capitals, the climates of other countries and so on. This knowledge helps me a lot in my later learning.补充:In short, high grades promote a student’s interests in my courses and other knowledge, and interests can do a lot of help to get a high score. Last but not least, grades can give students the feeling of success. Students obtain a sense of achievement when they try very hard to get a high grade. This sense of achievement reminds them to keep on working. In a word, grades give students a feeling that can help them improve themselves and do a better job in the following learning. The merits of grades outweigh that of written evaluations. If we adopt written evaluations, students may probably not have the impetus to work hard, lose the interests in their courses and enjoy the feeling of success. Therefore, I strongly support that grades do more good than harm as a measurement to value a student
